What Is Addictions Counselling?

  • To prevent addiction we need to understand how it starts and to do that we have to look at it in three different facets. The first is that people use drugs and alcohol to cope with the daily pressures of home, school and or work. Second is if someone experienced trauma, loss, emotional neglect or abuse regardless of age, in turn increases their chance of abusing substances even more, especially when they have poor coping skills. In addition lack of support from your immediate circle and mental health struggles can lead to even more personal challenges.

  • Unwarranted negative self-image may develop which makes it even harder to cope. The third criteria is that addiction may be present in some people by virtue of how their brain processes chemicals. This is also referred to as having an addictive personality which makes one more prone to getting hooked easier. This can also be attributed to their family tree otherwise known as genetic susceptibility, increasing the chances for addiction to develop. Addiction happens when any one of these above criteria are strongly present. In the short-term substances provide temporary relief but as frequency and quantity increases, the brain learns that these substances can help. With time this pattern becomes ingrained even deeper to the point, where reaching out for alcohol and or drugs becomes automatic. Repeated substance use changes the chemicals, brain structure and the personality of the user. Life situations worsens and relationships deteriorate with self and others.

Shweta is an absolute godsend! I don’t live in Alberta, but required acute and long-term services for my family member. Shweta traveled to rural Alberta to meet us, introduce herself and make a plan. She didn’t require us to sign a contract and wasn’t pushy at all, which was a relief!

She has obvious compassion and empathy for her clients and she is extremely knowledgeable.

Great service!! My family and I met with Shweta, Do u know that they make house calls. My family went through a traumatic event and needed to decompress.

My hubby and I learned  great tools to become stronger parents. It was even more wonderful to have this service in the comfort of our home.

I feel very comfortable with my discussions during my session with Rapid Action Nurses. I am always provided with many techniques to try and I leave my session with some very knowledgeable information and feeling good about the session.

I always look forward to knowing I have an upcoming appointment, sometimes knowing just that helps me get through until the next session. They are doing great things and helping many!

Great service. I was able to get the help I needed in order to move forward. The therapist or psychologist I met was helpful, understanding and friendly.

I would recommend this to someone who wants to do a video counselling instead of one on one in person.
